Pichincha, capital province of Ecuador, is located on the slope of the Andean mountain at 9,350 feet above sea level. It was built on the foundations of an ancient Inca city and is famous for its well-preserved colonial center, with several churches from the 16th and 17th centuries, and other buildings that mix European and indigenous styles.
Around Pichincha you will find ancient forests, home of the beautiful spectacled bear and from where you can enjoy hiking, birdwatching and exotic fauna, sports activities (rivers and lakes), volcanoes, archaeological parks, nature reserves, among many other. Additionally, you will find the famous Mitad del Mundo monument and park, where you can enjoy a delicious Ecuadorian coffee or perhaps a cup of traditional mulled wine, you won't want to miss the experience of standing between two hemispheres, exactly at 0 latitude.
Quito is the first city declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Valle de los Chillos is surrounded by 12 volcanoes, many of them snow-capped, including the Rumiñahui, Cotopaxi, and Antisana volcanoes, making up a majestic Andean contour that accompanies such a wonderful, sunny and cool climate, with an average temperature of 20° C. Its people are very warm, the food is surprising and diverse, with a wide range of restaurants to enjoy the best Andean and international cuisine.
The long course offers an exciting challenge with 110km and 1800m of ascent. Cyclists will start from Bulevar Santa Clara, pass through the main streets of the Historic Center, and delve into the majestic nature of Refugio Ecológico Molinuco. At this point, the return journey will begin. The race will feature a mountain pass of 10km with an average gradient of 4%, where attacks and the King of the Mountain competition will begin. The descent will provide a great view of the Valley of the Chillos until reaching a spectacular circuit in the city that will allow you to enjoy speed, applause, and the support of fans who can relish this competition.
The medium course, covering 70 km, is as challenging as the long-distance one but with less climbing, featuring an elevation of 1200 m. It follows the same circuit in two laps. Cyclists will depart from Bulevar Santa Clara, pass through the main streets of the Historic Center, and immerse themselves in the majestic nature of Refugio Ecológico Molinuco. At this point, the return will begin. The race will include a mountain pass of 10 km with an average gradient of 4%, where attacks and the King of the Mountain competition will start. The descent will offer a great view of the Valley of the Chillos, ending at a spectacular city circuit that will let you enjoy speed, applause, and the support of fans who can relish this competition.
LONG COURSE IS A COMPETITION: Only the finishers of the long course are eligible for category rankings and Overall and Podium awards. If you want to race and be ranked in your category, you must complete the long course. Top 20% of finishers in each age group earn a spot in the Qualifier Corral at every GFNY World event.
MEDIUM COURSE IS NOT A COMPETITION: The riders of the medium course will be provided their start-to-finish time, but will not be ranked by finish time. All finish times will be listed in alphabetical order.
THE JERSEY: All riders receive the official GFNY Ecuador race jersey, which is mandatory attire at the race. The jersey is designed in NYC and Made in Italy.
CHIP TIMING: GFNY Ecuador is a timed race. Each athlete has their own timing chip, which starts right after you cross the start line and stops when you cross the finish line. Timing results will be available at gfny.cc/results.
FINISHER MEDAL: Every GFNY Ecuador finisher receives a medal, no matter which distance they complete. All finishers also earn a “Finish” towards their 3x2023 GFNY medal or the 10x medal. Go to gfny.com/medals for more information on GFNY’s multi-finisher medals.
